Do you have a suit that you’re looking to dress up? There are some quick fixes like a nice pair of cuff links, a pocket square, and maybe a new Steven Alan shirt. But if you’re really looking to transform the suit, there’s nothing better than adding a vest.
If you had a bespoke suit made by a tailor, you should go back to that tailor and have your vest made. They should be able to match the fabric exactly, and they’ll already have your measurements.
If you can’t go back to your tailor, or you bought your suit off the rack, then having a vest made will be a little more challenging. Chances are you will not be able to match the fabric of your suit exactly. In that case, you may be better of not trying to match the suit, but rather choose a complimentary color. Even if you can find a fabric that is close to the same color, you may notice that it looks different under certain lighting conditions, or it may feel different to the touch. Work with a tailor to pick a fabric that matches the finish and feel of your jacket, and compliments it in color.
A less expensive option is to buy a vest off the rack to wear with your suit. In this situation you are usually best off going with a solid color like black or gray. Wear your suit jacket and try on several options. You can find a vest for as little as $69 – $99 if you shop around.
