Tie Bars: When To Wear Them (And Not…)

Tie bars are coming back into the spotlight lately so we want to give you an easy when and when not to wear tie bars list for this somewhat useless, but still very unique and fun men’s accessory:

WHEN TO WEAR TIE BARS

If you are in a career which requires you to wear a tie or be active or bend over…a lot
If your tie bar generally coordinates with your other metal accessories like your belt buckle (gold, silver, etc)
If you aren’t wearing many other accessories
If you have figured out the placement of a tie bar along the tie–at the very bottom of your sternum/chest bone
If you’re wearing a skinny tie

WHEN NOT TO WEAR TIE BARS

If you are interviewing
If you are already wearing a pocket square, rings, necklaces and a bunch of other bling–less is usually more
If you can’t keep the tie bar straight–that’s the whole reason you’re wearing it
If you aren’t wearing a tie…duh

Trend Watch: Cutaway Collars

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about…a million different ways to just tie a tie…button down shirt collars have been going through growing pains the last few years. We saw the club collar come and go and now the wide-spread collar or cutaway collar is growing in demand. It’s a sophisticated look without being too flashy. BUT, here is our disclaimer–this look will not look great on every man. We recommend this look only for thin and/or long faced men. Round faced men, we’re sorry…but you’re stuck with medium to regular spread collars (darn…a total classic). We’re finding that the best cutaways are being made by British companies right now. Take a look at some of these cutaway collars–would you wear any of these?

There are different tastes for us all, so choose wisely, but doubtful you will be disappointed with any of these:

It is often said in web development that if you aren’t embarrassed by your first released then you didn’t release soon enough. That’s the mantra we decided to follow with our directory of tailors in New York City. Rather than spend the next few months gathering information, taking pictures, writing bios and building the directory before ever letting it see the light of day, we’ve decided to push it out into the world for you to tear apart.

We need your help! The directory is young and under-populated. We only have 27 tailors in the directory today, and the information we have on them is spotty. Do you know these tailors? Have you been there? Please leave a comment on the tailor page with any updated information or reviews that you have. And as for the tailors in NYC that we missed (I’m sure there’s one or two), please leave a comment here with any information you have about them.
